The rise of Rose

03 Feb 2012

Channeling original house vibes, and with a firm ear to the underground, Jesse Rose was one of the best nights Trilogy put on last year. And the Made To Play head honcho and DJ is back for round 2. We found out what to expect this time around...

You played the same club not so long ago - was it that good that you\'re looking forward to coming back?
I really wasn\'t expecting to have such a good time but it was great. As soon as I left I was like \'when can i go back?\'

Did Dubai surprise you at all when you were here?

Yeah, I wasn\'t expecting it to be sooo good. Everything is super on point.

Bass music has really made an impression in the last few years, seeping into a lot of DJs sets - what are you feeling at the moment?

I personally am heading into the house music revival, going back to the classics and getting the funk into it again. Everything turned too bassy and lost some of the soul. This year we remember where house music comes from, including Chicago, and bring back all those influences.

What\'s the best thing about 2012 so far?

It\'s already been amazing; working with a new management team that looks after bands like Phoenix and Bloc party, they bring new angles to everything I\'m working on. And the \'Made For The Night\' project is going great, we now have residencies all over the world including Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo & Los Angeles. My new album is being mixed this week which is exciting because it\'s been two years in the works. I\'m also just producing a new rapper from Atlanta which is another angle to life living in L.A. And not forgetting the new Zombie Disco Squad album which just got delivered to my inbox, i\'m well excited to be releasing this on Made To Play later in the year.

You\'re playing Watergate the night after - so relatively straight-laced Dubai followed by Berlin hedonism. Do you ever have to pinch yourself at the places you get to?

In honesty I\'m normally too je-tlagged or sleepless to realise what\'s going on until after the events. This really hit me last year when I played to 40,000 people in Sydney on New Year\'s Day and went straight from my set onto a plane to play
a festival in Melbourne. I was like one minute did that just happen. I\'m super lucky and truly love what i am able to do.

What\'s your preferred DJ set up and why?

These days it\'s USB keys, a pair of 2000s and a Pioneer mixer but when I play in Berlin I go to my lock up and bring out lots of old vinyl which is love.

And if people haven\'t heard you before, describe a typical Jesse Rose set...

I hope that there is nothing typical when I play but I guess if you like underground house music you\'ll have fun. I love to play tracks and get into a groove, and then drop the unexpected.
