A quick word with D-Pulse

Their music channels classic French house, Chicago bass and playful house beats and is played by big hitters like Oakenfold, Garnier and Aeroplane. They are Russian duo D-Pulse and we spoke to them ahead of their February 17 date at audio tonic

What\'s your favorite piece of hardware or software that\'s in your studio?
Our favorite one is the Roland Jupiter 6, but the most usable is the Elektron Monomachine sfx-60.

You have won an award for \'Shelkunchik\', can you tell us more about that?
The famous Russian composer Tchaikovsky comes from our home town and we were invited to contribute to the compilation of local electronic producers and remix his work. We chose a theme from \"Nutcracker\", and it was later released by german label Exun. Then it was selected by Juan Atkins (he was head of DIA, Design Innovation Awards) in the best electronic act category.

When and how did you guys form the band?
It all began in school. We were about 14 years old and all studied in same class. Young rock lovers and Autechre fans came up together to mix beats with guitars and thats what you can still hear nowadays.

What was your biggest performance so far?
It was in 2007 at the Stereoleto festival in Saint-Petersburg, we played after french duo Air, and there was the biggest unrepeatable atmosphere there.

You are inspired by French house, which record would you say is an old time classic ?
Daft Punk\'s \"Homework,\" any time any place, everybody\'s gonna dance and shout!

What advice would you give to young up and coming DJs?
Be nerds!

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at an event ?
We didn\'t think it was funny at the time, but it was when we were touring around Greece, I nearly broke my leg after an unsuccessful jump (for a nice photo shot) and Sem had flu that night and a really high temperature. So in these conditions we both played a 5 hours DJ set in Thessaloniki, and people didn\'t let us go. We thought it would be the end of D-Pulse, but we suddenly realized that real artists should stand for the music, no matter what it costs :)

What do you say when someone from the crowd requests you to play something that you know you will never play …
We tell them that we only know \"Radio GaGa\" by Queen and have no clue who the Lady is…

You have a big following in Russia how many cities did you play in the last year ?
About 25-30, yeah we love to travel!

It’s your first time to play in Dubai is it your first time visiting here as well ?
We were here 2 months ago, during a flight transit on our Bali tour. We only stayed for one night in the Airport hotel: we listened to the morning prayer and looked at the highest building from our hotel room.

Which acts in your genre do you recommend looking out for?
We have many young bands in Russia with impressive live performances: On-The-Go, Pompeya and Tesla Boy to name a few.
