Musical charge

31 Jan 2012

The Plus-Minus parties might be on the infrequent side, but you know that when they do arrive, they bring with them a whole heap of musical goodness. And their latest guest DJ, the UK's Matt Tolfrey, promises to bring the funk to M-Dek this Thursday.

A veteran of the UK house scene, and one of the current crop championing the return to classic house values where basslines and big beats are to the fore, he's released wave after wave of killer cuts across ace labels like Visionquest and Crosstown Rebels, not to mention his own ever impressive Leftroom label. And it's on his own label that he'll be releasing his debut artist album, Word of Mouth. And it's one that's been rather interestingly put together as Matt explains...

‘I cannot play the piano and I am not professionally trained in any way musically, but through years of DJing I know exactly what I like, and I have great tracks in my head that need to get out. While searching the Internet for alternate ideas of making music, I came across some amazing new software that enables you to simply sing or hum into a mic, which then translates into midi notes, which you then use as the basis of your tracks. In essence, it means that while I am walking the streets, or away travelling, and I come up with an idea for a bassline, or a melody, I can simply record it into my phone, then when I return home, sing it into the computer. In other words, in theory the album is going to be written with my mouth, not my fingers, and realised with the help of guest vocalists - hence the name ‘Word Of Mouth.'

And you can find out exactly just what that cutting edge music sounds like this coming Thursday as Matt plays the Plus-Minus party. And with Friday announced as a dry day, even more incentive to get your weekend partying out of the way nice and early.
