A DJ so famous he even has his own rhyming slang named after him – the phrase ‘It’s All Gone Pete Tong’ coined in the late 80s – there’s little Pete Tong hasn’t achieved during his long and illustrious career.
A mainstay on BBC Radio 1 behind the legendary Essential Mix, he’s also a globe-trotting DJ who’s played in every club and festival worth its ticket prices, playing a mix of underground house and techno alongside well chosen classics across thousands of gigs. Awarded an MBE in 2014 for his services to dance music, Pete Tong first began broadcasting in in the late 70s, before moving to Radio 1 in 1991, beginning a 20 year journey that has been broadcast around the world making him one of the most recognizable voices in dance music.
Tong has also played a big part in the rise of Ibiza in club culture, thanks to his residencies at Pacha and frequent live broadcasts from the White Isle, while in 2008, he was the driving force behind the International Music Summit in Ibiza, which pulled together key players from the dance music industry for an intense weekend of networking that led into the opening weekend of the Ibiza clubbing calendar: a fitting conclusion for one of the club scene’s hardest working and most talented DJs.
