From February 25, 2026, <strong>most travellers<\/strong> who used to enter the UK visa-free now <strong>need to apply for an ETA<\/strong> before boarding their flight. Airlines can turn you away at check-in, even if you\u2019ve flown to Britain many times before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know so your trip doesn\u2019t start with a surprise at the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the UK ETA and Who Needs It?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is not a visa. It\u2019s an <strong>online travel clearance that gives you permission to board a flight to the UK<\/strong> if your nationality normally allows visa-free entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It now applies to passport holders from 85 countries who previously did not need a visa to visit the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/shutterstock_543204871.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/shutterstock_543204871.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/shutterstock_543204871-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/shutterstock_543204871-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/shutterstock_543204871-150x75.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"if-youre-travelling-as-a-family-or-group\">Since the ETA is linked to your passport, <strong>every traveller needs their own approval, including babies and children<\/strong>. Keep that in mind if you\u2019re planning a family trip to the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you hold dual nationality and one of your passports is British, you\u2019ll need to travel on a valid British passport or carry a Certificate of Entitlement. Without one of these, airlines may refuse boarding. From late February 2026, Certificates of Entitlement will be issued in digital format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Does the UK ETA Cost in 2026?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>ETA costs \u00a316<\/strong>, which is roughly AED 80<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It allows <strong>multiple entries over two years<\/strong>, or until your passport expires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each <strong>stay can be up to six months<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can travel for <strong>tourism, business visits, short-term study, and transit<\/strong> if you pass through UK border control between flights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The application is done through the special app or online. You need to upload your passport details, add a photo, and answer a few security questions. Emirates has introduced a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/emirates-launches-fourth-daily-flight-from-dubai-to-london-gatwick\/\">fourth daily flight from Dubai to London Gatwick (LGW)<\/a><\/strong>, and Air Arabia will launch direct flights <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/air-arabia-to-launch-non-stop-flights-to-london-from-march-2026\/\">from Sharjah to London Gatwick<\/a><\/strong> from March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UAE Nationals vs UAE Residents: Know the Difference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UAE nationals can travel to the UK visa-free, but they are required to obtain an ETA before departure. The Emirati passport remains <a href=\"https:\/\/platinumlist.net\/guide\/uae-passport-in-henley-index-2026-now-among-top-5-strongest-in-the-world\/\">one of the strongest in the world<\/a>. But <strong>being a UAE resident with an Emirates ID does not automatically give you the same access<\/strong>. Your travel privileges depend on your passport, not your residency status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a UAE resident, it\u2019s always worth checking whether your nationality requires an ETA under the new travel rules. However, your Emirates ID still opens the door to plenty of travel opportunities.
