American musician Julianna Barwick is a unique talent who has garnered support through her ambient, new-age style of electronic music. From early days in the church choir in her native Louisiana, Barwick has released 5 studio albums and has travelled the world performing her songs.
Her career began with the self-released EP, Sanguine, in 2006. The EP contains songs that combines vocal percussion, improvisation and electronic loops. She then followed her debut EP with Florine in 2009. Her second EP used a loop station to accompany her vocals and synthesized sounds with minimalist repetition.
Her first full album, The Magic Place, was released in 2011 by Asthmatic Kitty Records. The album was very well received and earnt Barwick coverage on Metacritic, with a score of 82/100 and BBC Music, where it was ranked 19th on their best albums of 2011.
2013 saw Barwick release the album Nepenthe which featured the string ensemble Amiina and a girl’s choir and was also praised by Allmusic, MusicOMH and Tiny Mix Tapes, all rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Barwick’s most recent album, Will, released in 2016 on Dead Oceans Records, further establishing Barwick as a recognised and respected artist, and was listed by The Quietus and The Skinny as one of their albums of the year.
