Canadian singer Jessy Lanza is widely regarded as one of the rising stars in the synthpop genre, having already released two studio albums in just the 8 years since beginning her career. Born in Ontario, Canada, Lanza learnt to play the piano and clarinet at a young age and studied jazz at the Concordia University.
Lanza began performing in 2009, however her major break came in 2013 when she released her debut album, Pull My Hair Back. The album was very well received and saw her listed as one of the best new artists of the year by XLR8R. The album went on to rank fourth in Resident Advisor’s Top 20 Albums of 2013 and was shortlisted for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize.
Lanza’s second album, Oh No, was released in 2016 on Hyperdub records and was also shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. The album also received rave reviews from AllMusic, Exclaim!, and Mixmag, hitting 9/10 on each of their charts. Oh No was also included in three Album of the Year lists by Gorilla Vs. Bear, The Vinyl Factory and The Quietus.
Jessy Lanza’s ability to reach high notes has made her voice instantly recognisable for fans. She also drew inspiration from Missy Elliot and Timbaland in her songwriting. Her career has seen her perform at numerous major festivals and clubs across the world.
