American hip-hop and R&B DJ and actor DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the most well-known faces in America through his memorable acting role as Will Smith’s best friend ‘Jazz’ in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Jazzy Jeff took to DJing at a young age, performing at school and block parties in the early 1980s. He joined forces with Will Smoth, winning a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989 for their track ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’. The duo also enjoyed further success for their track ‘Summertime’ which peaked at Number 4 on the US Singles Chart and also earnt them their second Grammy nomination.
Following the duo’s split, Jazzy Jeff helped develop a number of artist’s careers through his production company ‘A Touch of Jazz’ Artists that Jazzy Jeff helped include Eminem, The Roots and Jill Scott.
Jazzy Jeff reunited with Will Smith to star as the Philadelphia best friend for Smith in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, earning a cult following due to Smith and Jeff’s signature handshake greetings and his frequent ejection from the house by Uncle Phil.
Jazzy Jeff continued to perform as a DJ and scratch-expert, performing around the US and the world. HE produced a number of songs and performed alongside Smith on numerous occasions, including a 2013 performance on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show.
