Gorillaz is an English virtual band that was formed in 1998 by Damon Albarn of alternative rock band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. The band comprises four fictional members – 2D on lead vocals and keyoards, Murdoc Niccals on bass, Noodle on guitar and keyboards, and Russell Hobbs on drums and percussion. In reality, the music is a result of collaborations with various musicians, with the only permanent musical contributor being Albarn.
In 2001 Gorillaz released their first self-titled album that sold over 7 million copies and entered them into the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. The band has won several awards including one Grammy Award, three MTV Europe Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and have been nominated for nine Brit Awards.
Having released four hugely successful albums between 2001 and 2011, the band went on a brief hiatus, releasing their fifth studio album ‘Humanz’ in April 2017.
