Driving through the city without hitting a red light sounds like a dream, but in Sharjah, it’s becoming reality. Thanks to the launch of new smart traffic signals, drivers can now pass through multiple green lights without needing to stop — if they stick to the optimal speed of 40 to 50 km/h.
This upgrade comes as part of the “Green Traffic” initiative led by Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA). The smart system uses sensors and detectors to monitor traffic volumes in real time and automatically adjusts signal timings to match flow. It also helps reduce traffic congestion, especially during rush hours.

By limiting unnecessary stops and starts, the system helps cut down on vehicle emissions. Sharjah has been making several updates lately in the name of smarter, more efficient services for drivers. Earlier this week, authorities announced that driving licences and vehicle documents can now be delivered straight to your door via Emirates Post. And if that wasn’t enough, the emirate recently decided to waive all traffic fines older than 10 years.
For residents, these changes add up to a smoother driving experience and a greener, more efficient city. Keep an eye on those green lights — Sharjah’s just made it a lot easier to catch them.
