If you’re a South African living in the UAE, renewing your passport just got a whole lot simpler. As of July 2025, VFS Global has introduced a new service that lets you apply for a new passport right here in Dubai — no consulate visit or flight back home required.
The passport renewal service is now available at Wafi Mall in Dubai at VFS Global, world’s largest visa application centre, which is currently the only official partner of South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs in the UAE.

Instead of going through the consulate, you can now follow this procedure:
- Visit vfsglobal.com
- Click on “Apply for Consular Services → Passport”
- Book a slot
- Check the list of required documents
- Go to your appointment for biometric enrolment and fee payment
The application is then sent to South Africa for processing. When it’s ready, the new passport will be returned to VFS Global in Dubai for collection. You’ll get a tracking number to monitor progress online. Processing time takes from 8 to 10 weeks.

It’s best to apply at least 12 months before your current passport expires and not to confirm travel bookings until your document is in hand.
You can also use the service at the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi if that’s more convenient.
Now that you’re set with your passport, don’t forget — UAE residents can enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a long list of countries, including Malaysia, Georgia, and more.
