Art and engineering come together in Dubai this April as one of Andy Warhol’s most unique works arrives in the city. The famous BMW M1 Art Car, painted by Warhol himself, will be on display at Art Dubai from April 16 to 20, 2025.

This rare car is part of the BMW Art Car Collection, which turns 50 this year. Warhol’s M1 is one of the most famous pieces in the series and is visiting Dubai for the first time — making this event a highlight for both art fans and car lovers.

Back in 1979, Warhol turned the BMW M1 into a moving artwork in just 28 minutes, using about 6 kilograms of paint. Instead of his usual pop culture themes like celebrities or brands, he painted the car with quick, bold brushstrokes to reflect its speed and power.

The M1 itself is a legendary model, designed by Giorgio Giugiaro and built for racing. After Warhol painted it, the car actually competed in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race and finished 6th overall — proving it was more than just a showpiece.

This Dubai stop is part of a global tour celebrating five decades of the BMW Art Car project. Over the years, other big-name artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Esther Mahlangu, and Jeff Koons have contributed to the collection, blending creativity with high-performance design.

Whether you’re into modern art or motorsports, this is a chance to see something truly different. Warhol’s M1 Art Car offers a glimpse into a time when the worlds of art and racing collided — and created something unforgettable.
