Saudi Arabia has added two new names to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, marking another step in its efforts to preserve natural heritage and promote sustainable tourism. The newly recognised North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark now join a select list of protected geological areas worldwide that meet UNESCO’s standards for conservation, education, and community involvement.

The announcement highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to showcasing its diverse landscapes and geological history while contributing to its Vision 2030 goals for environmental awareness and eco-tourism development.

North Riyadh Geopark

Situated at the foothills of the Tuwaiq mountain, North Riyadh Geopark is a striking blend of natural formations, fossils, and historic settlements. Visitors can expect to encounter:

  • Ancient rock formations and dramatic cliffs
  • Fossil beds offering a glimpse into prehistoric eras
  • Thadiq Village, with tribal roots tracing back over 370 years
  • Ghamra Village, popular for off-roading, hiking, and camping

This geopark brings together heritage and adventure in a setting that is both educational and visually captivating.

Salma Geopark

Located in Hail, Salma Geopark is set among volcanic landscapes and towering mountains. The area is known for:

  • Magmatic rock formations and craters dating back 740 million years
  • The striking Al-Hutaymah Crater
  • Salma Mountain, home to natural rock structures and rare wildlife like the Nubian ibex and Arabian oryx
  • The Tabah Heritage Village, a centuries-old site perched on a volcano crater

This geopark not only offers geological significance but also a rare opportunity to experience Saudi Arabia’s lesser-known mountain ecosystems and cultural sites.

These designations are expected to support local community involvement, boost sustainable tourism, and encourage further exploration of Saudi Arabia’s natural diversity. Both parks serve as gateways to understanding the Kingdom’s unique geoheritage, while also aligning with broader environmental and cultural initiatives under Vision 2030.
