Expo City Dubai is embracing change with an updated masterplan that allows cars while maintaining its vision for a sustainable, pedestrian-friendly urban hub. Originally designed as a car-free city when it launched in 2022, Expo City is undergoing a major transformation. The revamped 3.5-square-kilometer site aims to become home to over 35,000 residents and a thriving professional hub for 40,000 workers.

Under the new masterplan, some vehicles — specifically private cars, delivery services, and emergency vehicles — will have limited access to designated areas. Officials have assured the public that this change will not disrupt the city’s walkable design or create traffic congestion.

What’s Changing at Expo City Dubai?

City leaders announced a significant overhaul in September, introducing a range of new projects and enhancements:

  • AED 1.75 billion mixed-use development near the Dubai Exhibition Centre.
  • The establishment of DP World’s global headquarters.
  • A comprehensive upgrade of the Dubai Exhibition Centre itself.

Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Development and Delivery Officer for Expo City Dubai, explained that vehicle access is a necessary adaptation for creating a fully integrated, “15-minute city.” Residents and workers will be able to meet all their daily needs — healthcare, retail, and leisure — within a short walk.

Despite the inclusion of vehicles, the focus remains on eco-friendly mobility. Soft, low-emission transportation like e-scooters and Careem bikes will continue to play a vital role. Expo City also benefits from direct connectivity to Dubai Metro, offering seamless links to over 60 stations across the emirate.

The redesigned masterplan aligns with Dubai’s broader urban initiatives, including the Dubai Walk Masterplan, which envisions a pedestrian-friendly city year-round.

“Our goal is to enhance quality of life by encouraging active mobility, reducing commute times, improving air quality, and fostering social connections,” said Al Khatib.
