Children in Ras Al Khaimah are taking part in a new kind of summer experience that focuses on cultural learning. A two-week heritage summer camp has been launched by the Al Mataf Society for Maritime Heritage and Arts, offering children aged 8 to 14 the chance to explore Emirati traditions through a variety of activities.

Running until July 20 under the slogan “We row through heritage,” the programme includes:

1. Craft-making sessions:

  • Talli embroidery
  • Burqa stitching
  • Al Sadu weaving – using wool from sheep, goats, and camels to create patterned textiles

2. Cooking workshops:

  • Girls learn how to prepare traditional Emirati meals
  • Boys are taught customs like serving Arabic coffee and greeting elders

The camp also includes lessons on first aid and road safety and respectful behaviour and religious values.

Participants take educational field trips to museums and cultural landmarks in the area, expanding their knowledge beyond the classroom.

According to Mohammed Abdullah Al Shehhi, Chairman of the Al Mataf Society, the camp is more than just a way to spend the summer. It’s part of a community effort to ensure Emirati heritage is passed on to future generations through active participation rather than just storytelling.

While this initiative is taking place in Ras Al Khaimah, there are also many other summer camps across the UAE. Cities like Sharjah, Dubai, and Fujairah have lined up programmes for children, and even Yas Island in Abu Dhabi is offering engaging activities for young visitors at its theme parks.
