Starting October 28, Indian expats in the UAE will only receive e-passports when applying for a new passport. This update was confirmed by the Consulate General of India in Dubai. The new e-passports come with an embedded RFID chip that stores biometric and personal data, enhancing security and efficiency for travelers.

The process to apply for an e-passport is now quicker. Through the upgraded Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0), applicants can fill in their details online in just two minutes. Once you enter your old passport number and verify your information, the application can be submitted easily. This system helps reduce waiting times, especially at BLS Centres.

To apply, visit the GPSP 2.0 platform through the official online portal here.

New passports will require an ICAO-compliant biometric photo. If your photo does not meet the standards, your application will be delayed. You can find detailed instructions on the photo requirements here.

Currently, there are no plans to collect fingerprints or physical biometrics for passport applications outside of India. The processing time and fees for obtaining a passport will remain the same.

This change means that Indian passport holders will now carry a more secure document, which will come handy when going abroad. If you’re wondering what your travel options are, check the country’s position on the Henley Passport Index and explore the full list of visa-free countries.
