If you drive in Dubai, you’re no stranger to the Salik toll system. These gates, spread across 10 major roads, automatically deduct AED 4 every time you pass through. However, starting later this January, the toll system is shifting to a dynamic pricing structure designed to improve traffic flow during peak hours.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai first announced this change in November 2024. Under the new system, the amount you pay will depend on the time of day. The update introduces variable rates to ease congestion on the city’s busiest roads and offers free passage during certain hours.
Here’s how the new pricing works:
- 1 AM – 6 AM (daily): Free
- 6 AM – 10 AM (weekdays): AED 6
- 10 AM – 4 PM (daily): AED 4
- 4 PM – 8 PM (weekdays): AED 6
- 8 PM – 1 AM (daily): AED 4
- All-day Sundays (excluding public holidays and special events): AED 4
This tiered pricing aims to encourage off-peak travel and reduce congestion during high-traffic periods. The busiest times — early morning and late afternoon — align with typical commuting hours.
Salik toll gates are located at some of Dubai’s most trafficked roads, including Business Bay, Jebel Ali, and Al Safa. In addition, two new gates were introduced in November on Al Khail Road (Business Bay Crossing) and Sheikh Zayed Road (Al Safa South).
If you’re planning your daily commute or weekend outings, these changes can help you save on toll costs by adjusting your travel times. As Dubai continues to grow, dynamic pricing marks a step toward smarter and more efficient traffic management.
