The General Directorate of Traffic in Saudi Arabia has released updated guidelines for foreign visitors and GCC residents regarding the use of international and foreign driving licences in the Kingdom.

For visitors, the rules allow driving in Saudi Arabia using a valid foreign or international driving licence for up to one year from the date of entry — or until the licence expires, whichever comes first. However, the licence must be valid for the same category of vehicle being driven.

To be accepted, all licences must be translated by an accredited body, ensuring all information is clearly understood by local authorities.

The rules differ for citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. According to the Traffic Department, GCC residents can drive in Saudi Arabia using a valid licence from their home country. There’s no need to apply for a temporary Saudi licence, and they can continue using their national licence for as long as it remains valid.

However, there’s an important note: international driving permits issued within GCC countries cannot be used for cross-border driving within the GCC, including in Saudi Arabia.

These changes are part of the Kingdom’s efforts to streamline regulations for travellers and foreign residents. Other recent updates include the permission for foreigners to buy property in designated areas of Saudi Arabia starting in 2026, expanding access for long-term investors and expatriates planning to stay in the country.
