Dubai is planning something big for its future — a massive, air-conditioned walkway called The Loop. This 93-kilometer-long track is designed to make walking and cycling a primary mode of transport in the city, no matter the weather.
The Loop is a proposed project by URB, a sustainable urban planning company, as part of the larger Dubai Cycle City 2040 plan. The goal is to get 80% of Dubai’s residents to walk or bike daily. The Loop will create a comfortable, shaded, and air-conditioned pathway that connects key areas across Dubai.
The Loop is designed to be fully powered by renewable energy, mainly using kinetic energy — meaning your own movement will help generate electricity. The pathway will have pressure-sensitive pads that convert footsteps and cycling movements into usable energy.
The route will cover major areas, including:
- Sheikh Zayed Road corridor (similar to the Metro’s Red Line)
- Jebel Ali, Dubai Marina, JLT, Barsha, Al Quoz, Business Bay, Downtown, and DIFC
- Meydan and Nad Al Sheba
- Academic City, Dubailand, Sustainable City, DIP, and Expo City
Other eco-friendly features of the Loop in Dubai include:
- Recycled water for irrigation
- Vertical farms to support local food production
- Green spaces like mini parks, social hubs, and sports courts
Beyond being a transport alternative, The Loop will have fitness stations, social areas, and sports courts along the way, making it a place to exercise, meet people, and relax.
This project aims to reshape urban transport in Dubai, offering a sustainable, healthy, and traffic-free way to get around. If completed, The Loop could turn Dubai into one of the most walkable and bike-friendly cities in the world.
