Dubai has introduced 40 air-conditioned rest areas designed specifically for delivery riders, providing them with much-needed comfort while they wait for orders. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced this initiative to enhance road safety and improve working conditions for thousands of riders across the city.
Each facility is built to reduce heat exposure while maintaining good visibility on the roads. The air-conditioned seating areas can accommodate up to 10 riders, depending on the location, and each rest stop includes designated motorcycle parking spaces for convenience.
Dubai’s roads are busy with delivery riders transporting food, groceries, and parcels daily. Long hours under the sun can be exhausting, and having a comfortable space to rest can make a significant difference. This initiative aims to:
- Improve rider well-being by offering shaded, air-conditioned spaces.
- Reduce the risk of fatigue-related accidents.
- Encourage compliance with traffic rules for safer roads.
The locations were chosen based on demand for delivery services, using data analysis and coordination with delivery companies:
- Jumeirah & coastal areas: Umm Suqeim (Jumeirah 3), Al Wasl Road (Jumeirah)
- Downtown & business hubs: Business Bay, Dubai World Trade Centre, Al Satwa
- Western Dubai: Hessa Street, Barsha Heights, Al Barsha, The Greens
- Central & older districts: Al Karama, Riggat Al Buteen, Oud Metha, Al Rashidiya
- Eastern & northern Dubai: Nad Al Hamar, Al Nahda, Al Jaddaf, Al Garhoud, Mirdif
- Suburban & outer areas: Arabian Ranches, International City, Dubai Motor City, Last Exit Al Khawaneej
- Waterfront: Dubai Marina
By mid-2024, Dubai had 2,535 companies operating motorcycle delivery services, with a total of 46,600 delivery bikes on the roads. As the demand for quick deliveries grows, ensuring rider safety and comfort becomes even more essential.
This initiative is part of Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy, which aims for ‘Zero Fatalities’ on the roads. By providing proper rest facilities, the city is taking a step towards protecting both delivery riders and other road users.
