Maison Margiela was established in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Antwerp and former design assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier. He launched the brand from his Paris apartment, and over time opened a physical presence in Paris and Antwerp.
