Art and culture enthusiasts, mark your calendars — Jeddah welcomes the second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale, running from January 25 to May 25, 2025. The biennale will take place at the Western Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport, offering a thought-provoking exploration of faith, heritage, and artistic expression.

Following its debut in 2023, the first edition’s theme, Awwal Bait (First House), highlighted the Holy Ka’bah in Mecca as a central focus. This year’s theme, And All That Is In-Between, delves into the diverse ways faith is experienced and expressed, bridging the sacred and the artistic.

The 2025 Biennale gathers over 30 prominent institutions from across the globe, including Turkey, France, Egypt, Indonesia, the UK, and Spain. Visitors can explore more than 500 historical artifacts and contemporary artworks, with contributions from world-renowned museums such as the Louvre in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Highlights include rare pieces from Makkah and Madinah, offering a deep connection to the heart of Islamic culture.

This year’s event introduces a unique feature: the international architectural competition, The AlMusalla Prize. The contest invites innovative designs for a Musalla (prayer space) that is versatile, sustainable, and welcoming to both Muslim and non-Muslim visitors. The winning design will be constructed on-site, adding a tangible dimension to the biennale’s celebration of spiritual architecture.

Another focal point is the Al-Madar section, which features the Vatican Library’s fascinating contributions to The Art of Numbers display, showcasing how mathematics and spirituality intertwine in Islamic traditions. Additionally, new works by over 20 Saudi and international artists, including Libyan artist Nour Jaouda, will premiere at the event, offering fresh perspectives on faith and culture.

Visitors can look forward to exploring seven sections, including Al-Bidayah (The Beginning), Al-Madar, Al-Multaqi (The Gathering), and Al-Mukarramah (The Sacred), each weaving a narrative that links historical significance with contemporary creativity. Key exhibits will explore topics like celestial navigation and the rich legacy of Islamic gardens.

Returning to this year’s biennale is the Homage Gallery, a tribute to the enduring history of Mecca and Madinah, with expanded collections of artifacts and new pieces. The exhibition blends historical insight with modern interpretations, creating a layered and immersive experience for visitors.

The Islamic Arts Biennale offers a rare opportunity to engage with the rich tapestry of Islamic heritage through art, culture, and innovation. Whether you’re drawn to historical artifacts, contemporary installations, or groundbreaking architectural designs, this event promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Islamic art and expression.
