The International Astronomy Center (IAC) has shared its latest forecast on when Eid Al Fitr is likely to begin. The exact date depends on the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the end of Ramadan and the start of Shawwal, the next Islamic month.
In the Islamic lunar calendar, a new month begins only when the crescent moon is visible. This means the start of Eid Al Fitr is confirmed based on observations rather than a fixed date.
Astronomers have analyzed the conditions for sighting the crescent moon in the Gulf region. Their findings indicate that spotting the moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, will not be possible — even with advanced telescopes. Several factors, including the moon’s position relative to the sun and horizon, make it unlikely to be visible at that time.
Since the moon is not expected to be seen on March 29, it is likely that Ramadan will last the full 30 days. This means Eid Al Fitr would begin on Monday, March 31, for countries that require an actual moon sighting, such as the UAE.
However, some countries may still declare the start of Eid a day earlier, on Sunday, March 30. This is because in some regions, if the astronomical conjunction happens before sunset and the moon sets after sunset, the new month can be declared the next day.
The UAE government has already announced the holiday schedule for both public and private sector employees. The official break will run from Sunday, March 30, to Tuesday, April 1. If Ramadan lasts 30 days, an extra holiday on Wednesday, April 2, will extend the time off to five days.
Adding to the astronomical significance of March 29, a partial solar eclipse will take place that day, visible in parts of the Arab world. This will further impact moon visibility, as the eclipse and its aftermath make it even harder to spot the crescent.
While astronomers provide predictions, the official Eid date will be confirmed by local moon sighting committees. Keep an eye on announcements from religious authorities in your country to know exactly when Eid celebrations will begin.
