Anyone who loves Bollywood love songs from the late-2000s, would surely have the track ‘Khuda Jaane’ from 2008’s “Bachna Ae Haseeno” amongst their top 10 favourites. And the scintillating female vocals belongs to singer Shilpa Rao (born Apeksha Rao), for whom this was a breakthrough song. Her beginnings were under the guidance of some exceptionally gifted and celebrated musicians. Starting with her father who is the music-degree holder who taught her the basics and about precision, to playback singer Hariharan who pushed her towards getting trained under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and thereafter playback singer and music composer Shankar Mahadevan who also pointed her in the direction of jingles, which is where her singing career began.
Breaking into Bollywood after her run with jingles for some highly recognizable advertisements apparently was just a matter for time, according to Rao whose career took off post ‘Khuda Jaane’. Her soulful, unique voice and singing style made her quite sought-after with music directors, and also for which she has been recipient of many awards. Further to playback singing, Rao has also performed at music based TV shows, such as MTV Unplugged and “The Dewarists”.
