Dubai’s culinary scene is about to welcome Harummanis, a unique Singaporean-Malay restaurant from acclaimed chef Akmal Anuar. Known for his work at Dubai’s Michelin-starred 11 Woodfire, Anuar is now venturing into more personal territory by infusing his heritage into this exciting new establishment. Located on Al Wasl Road in Jumeirah, Harummanis will feature a laid-back atmosphere that brings a taste of Malay tradition to Dubai diners.

The name Harummanis reflects Anuar’s roots and pays tribute to the fragrant, sought-after Harumanis mango, emblematic in Malay culture. Anuar’s passion for Singaporean cuisine began with his family’s nasi padang stall in Teck Whye, Singapore, which his parents opened over 30 years ago. He sees this new venture as an homage to his upbringing and Malay heritage, bringing familiar flavors into a sophisticated, contemporary context.

The menu promises an inventive spin on classics. For example, diners can look forward to his twist on ketoprak, where traditional peanut sauce is replaced by a Japanese sesame dressing enriched with kombu. His beef cheeks rendang introduces fried mantou buns, an innovation he humorously calls “Minangka-bao,” drawing from both Malay and Chinese influences.

Harummanis will also feature udang galah, where Australian jumbo prawns are grilled with aromatic curry leaves and peppercorns, perfectly showcasing Anuar’s signature blend of bold, authentic flavors and elevated presentation.

With Harummanis, Anuar seeks to bring global attention to the rich layers of Malay cuisine, which he believes deserve more recognition. Embracing the fine-casual dining niche, he aims to redefine Singaporean-Malay flavors for a new audience, allowing Dubai residents and visitors to experience the true depth of his culinary heritage.
