Starting October 12, 2025, travelling to countries in Europe’s Schengen zone will come with new digital checks at the border. That’s when the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) officially goes live — replacing traditional passport stamps with biometric data and automated systems.

The new system will apply to all non-EU travellers entering any of the 29 Schengen countries, including popular destinations like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The EES is an automated platform that will register key information when travellers enter or exit the Schengen zone:

  • Fingerprints (only on first entry)
  • A facial scan
  • Passport details
  • Time and place of border crossing

The information will be stored securely for up to three years, or until the passport expires.

The EES applies to all non-EU travellers — whether you’re a UAE passport holder (who enjoys visa-free short stays in Schengen) or a resident of the UAE with a passport from countries like India, Pakistan, or the Philippines and holding a valid Schengen visa.

From October 12, here’s how Schengen travel will be different:

  • No more passport stamps – all entries and exits will be recorded electronically
  • Biometrics needed once – on first entry, the fingerprints and face scan will be taken. After that, automated e-gates should make crossing faster
  • Strict 90/180-day tracking – overstays will be automatically flagged, so travellers must manage their days in Schengen more carefully

In addition to the EES, there’s another major change for UAE residents planning to visit France or Germany. From June 2025, all visa applicants will need to complete a digital Visa Application Form online before booking their appointment on the VFS Global portal.
