Shantanu Mukherjee, popularly known as Shaan, is one of India’s foremost playback singers predominantly covering mainstream Bollywood, pop and love-songs. Shaan has often been seen as judge or host to many TV shows that showcase singing talent in India. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Li’l Champs, Star Voice of India. India’s version of The Voice have been graced with his enthusiastic involvement in developing up and coming singers in the country.
Shaan’s own career began with jingles as had several successful singers of his generation. However, he was one of the first to break into the new pop generation in the 90s by lending his voice for ‘Remix’ albums (of songs from older Bollywood movies) which quickly became supremely popular with music lovers, old and young. He had also collaborated with his sister, Sagarika and had a couple of albums released on his own.
As the Indian music scene adapted to the demands of the youth at the time, Shaan’s “fresh and energetic” vocals seamlessly became part of this scene and hence was part of 90% of Bollywood soundtracks thereafter and has hardly reduced even to this day. In fact, his playback singing has branched out from Hindi to several other Indian languages too.
