Indian singer and music producer Papon, formally known as Angarag Mahanta, is one of the country’s foremost musical geniuses to come from the state of Assam. Papon’s career focuses largely on Assamese classical and folk, fusion, jazz, Indian playback and ghazals and he has been trained in folk, devotional and Indian classical music. This is in addition to having musician parents such as Archana Mahanta and the late Khagen Mahanta who were highly celebrated musicians in Assam mentoring him.
Papon is part of a band he performs with at festivals worldwide, ‘Papon and The East India Company’. This band of 6 from Assam, comes with different musical influences such as metal, Assamese folk, blues, fusion and trip hop.
Due to his versatile yet unique vocals, Papon was signed for several Indian movie-songs, starting with 2011’s “Dum Maro Dum”. While his singing style and voice may not be the typical for Bollywood, Papon’s popularity rose particularly due to the music based TV shows, such as MTV India’s “The Dewarists” & “Coke Studio @ MTV” which garnered him a very large fanbase. Papon has also been lauded with awards for his non-film albums and contribution towards putting Assam on the pop-culture map.
