Biography & Career:
Ibibio Sound Machine are an English electronic afro-funk band from London, celebrated for a sound that crashes West African funk, disco, and highlife into post-punk and cutting-edge electronica. Fronted by the magnetic British-Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, the eight-piece turn the dancefloor into something close to a spiritual experience. Their genre defies easy labels — part Afrobeat, part electro, part raw post-punk energy — and that fearless fusion has made them one of the most distinctive live acts to emerge from the UK in years.

Formed in London in 2013 by Eno Williams and saxophonist Max Grunhard, the project began as an experiment in pairing the rhythmic character of the Ibibio language — the tongue Williams grew up hearing through her mother's folk stories — with modern production. Live musicians soon filled it out into a full band, and today the members span Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil, and beyond: Eno Williams on vocals, Alfred Kari Bannerman on guitar, Max Grunhard on saxophone, alongside Tony Hayden, Scott Baylis, Afla Sackey, Joseph Amoako, and Philip Ambrose. That international cast is a big part of why the sound feels so layered and alive.

Across a richly varied discography, the band have grown from cult dancefloor favourites into internationally acclaimed innovators. After a self-titled debut on Soundway, a run of albums on Merge Records earned praise from Pitchfork, The Guardian, and beyond, including one record shaped in the studio with Hot Chip. A sixth full-length arrives in 2026, pushing their euphoric, resistance-minded fusion into bold new territory.

On stage is where it all ignites. Every concert is a high-energy celebration of horns, polyrhythms, electronics, and Williams' commanding voice, building the kind of communal joy few bands can match. A relentless touring outfit, the group plays festivals and venues across Europe and the wider world, and a busy run of upcoming events and a major tour keep their live reputation soaring.
