Indian Ocean is an Indian rock band formed in New Delhi in 1990 and widely celebrated as the pioneer of the fusion rock genre in the country. A genre-bending music band at heart, the group weaves raga, folk, Sufi poetry, and classical Indian textures into rock instrumentation, creating a sound that is both deeply rooted and strikingly original. Often described as a jazz-spiced Indo-rock fusion, this rock band turned experimentation into a signature.
The story began with founders Susmit Sen and Asheem Chakravarty, soon joined by bassist and lead singer Rahul Ram in 1991 and drummer Amit Kilam in 1994 — a line-up that became the band's most beloved. The death of Chakravarty in 2009 and the departure of Sen in 2013 reshaped the group, with guitarist Nikhil Rao stepping in as lead guitarist. Today the members of Indian Ocean are Rahul Ram, Amit Kilam, Himanshu Joshi, Nikhil Rao, and Tuheen Chakravorty, each bringing distinct musicality to the whole.
On stage, the group is electric. Decades of relentless touring have taken them across India and around the world, from sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe to stages in the USA, UK, Australia, and Japan.
