Biography & Career:
Patrick Topping is an English DJ, producer and label boss from Newcastle upon Tyne, and one of the most recognisable names British tech house has produced this century. Born in February 1989, he is 37, and the route into music was anything but predictable. A teenage holiday to Ibiza convinced him that the only affordable way to keep coming back was to get behind the decks himself. A first set in a Newcastle working men's club in 2009 followed, then several years of promoting local nights while studying music production.

The turn came in 2013, when Jamie Jones put out his debut EP and took him on as something close to a protégé. A breakout single the following year won Track of the Season on the island along with Newcomer DJ at the DJ Awards, and a residency with the Paradise parties at DC10 ran through to 2019. More silverware followed, including Best Tech House DJ in 2018 and Best British DJ at the DJ Mag Best of British Awards in 2022. The songs have topped the Beatport tech house chart on a double-digit number of occasions, and remix work reaches well outside the club world to names such as The Streets, Sam Fender, Robyn and Calvin Harris.

In 2019 came Trick, both a label and an event series, which has since passed well over a hundred releases and grown into one of the more devoted communities in dance music, with fans wearing the lightning bolt logo on merchandise and occasionally on skin. Trick has staged festivals in Tenerife, Newcastle and Budapest, hosted stages at Creamfields, The Warehouse Project and Drumsheds, and given early platforms to Ewan McVicar, Ben Hemsley and Hannah Laing. Sonically the recent direction pulls in techno, electro, breakbeat and shifting tempos rather than settling into one lane.

Ibiza stays central to the story, with a long-running residency at Hï following the DC10 years, and the island is where much of the summer calendar lands. Elsewhere the tour routing covers Australia, South America, Asia, North America and the full European festival circuit, and upcoming events tend to be announced in blocks as each season gets confirmed. Away from the booth, family clearly matters: his wife Hayley is a musician who has sung on one of his releases, the two have been together since long before any of this took off, they married in 2017, and the couple's son arrived in 2024. He has also run alcohol-free daytime raves and raised money for a Newcastle domestic abuse charity, which sits oddly against the standard touring-DJ image and is more or less the point. Anyone choosing between a festival concert and one of the smaller club shows should know that the tighter rooms usually get the stranger records.
