The Martinez Brothers are a house and techno DJ duo from the Bronx, New York, made up of two actual siblings rather than a studio partnership with a shared alias. The names behind the act are straightforward: Steve Martinez Jr., the elder of the pair, born in 1989, and Chris Martinez, born in 1992. Neither publicises much about private life, so exact birthdays stay off the record, but the age gap of roughly three years explains plenty about the dynamic, since one brother pulled the other into the booth while both were still very young.

Music reached them through their father, Steve Martinez Sr., a pastor and former Paradise Garage regular who put both boys into the church band before their teens. Percussion, keys and bass came first, learned alongside musicians decades older and across disco, soul and salsa. By their mid teens the two were standing in the crowd at Shelter in Manhattan, absorbing sets from the New York greats. Their ethnicity is Puerto Rican American, and that heritage runs straight through the productions, with salsa rhythms and Latin percussion sitting underneath the house and techno framework alongside the hip hop the Bronx handed them.

A first release arrived in 2007 with a push from Dennis Ferrer, who brought the pair into his circle while they were both still teenagers. Since then the duo has built the Cuttin Headz label, been named DJs of the year by Mixmag, held a long-running Ibiza residency at DC10 that reaches back to 2011, and collaborated across a strikingly wide field, from Nile Rodgers and Louie Vega through to Latin and rap artists such as Tokischa, Fuego and Rema. The songs tend to land somewhere between raw club tool and Latin party record, which is precisely why they work as well at an underground after-hours as on a festival main stage.

Both brothers now split their year between New York and Ibiza. The tour workload is relentless, covering island residencies, European festival bills, large-scale warehouse shows in London and headline slots at major American festivals. Upcoming events are usually rolled out season by season, with summers weighted towards Ibiza and the colder months towards South America, Asia and the international club circuit. What defines them on stage is the back-and-forth between two people: cutting across decks, layering edits live and building the room up together rather than one person steering alone.
