Biography & Career:
Sofi Tukker is an American duo whose sound has never fitted neatly into one box - part house, part Brazilian pop, part live band, and loud about all three. The members of Sofi Tukker met at Brown University: Sophie Hawley-Weld was playing bossa nova covers in a campus bar when Tucker Halpern walked in, and the two started making music within days. She had spent time studying Portuguese and living in Brazil, reading poets like Chacal and Ana Cristina Cesar; he had come to production after illness ended a promising college basketball career. Those opposite backgrounds turned into the whole identity of the project.
The breakthrough came in 2016 with a debut single built on a Chacal poem, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording and put an unknown pair on festival bills worldwide. A second nomination followed for the 2018 debut album, and the run has not slowed since - three more albums, a smartphone campaign that turned one collaboration into a global chart hit, and hundreds of millions of streams. The Sofi Tukker music genre sits somewhere between deep house, dance-pop, disco and Brazilian rhythm, and the songs switch between English and Portuguese without warning. Their nationality is American, though the writing borrows freely from Brazil, and the best songs in the catalogue tend to be the ones where a poem, a guitar riff and a four-to-the-floor kick all land at once.
Live, this is not a laptop act. A Sofi Tukker concert is built around an instrument they designed themselves - a light-triggered rig played with drumsticks - plus live guitar, dual vocals and DJ sections stitched together in one continuous set. Both are still in their thirties, and an age gap of a couple of years between them has never mattered on stage. The current Sofi Tukker tour runs through six countries with more than twenty shows, and tickets for headline nights at Red Rocks, the Greek Theatre and Mexico City tend to move quickly.
One thing that comes up constantly: whether the pair are together. Talk of a boyfriend situation between the two misses the point - they are best friends, roommates and business partners, and have said so repeatedly. What holds the project together is the working relationship rather than a romantic one, and after a decade the output suggests that arrangement is working.
