Biography & Career:
Ebru Gündeş is one of the most powerful voices in Turkish music, a singer, actress and television personality whose emotional style has kept her at the top for more than three decades. Before fame arrived, she worked in a garment workshop, until a relative took the young singer to producer Neşe Demirkat, who immediately recognised the talent. Early stage experience came from singing backing vocals for Emel Sayın, and the debut album released in 1993 sold more than a million copies, turning a newcomer into a household name almost overnight.
The sound blends Turkish pop, arabesque, fantasy music and classical Turkish influences, built around dramatic love songs about heartbreak, loss and resilience. In 1999 a brain haemorrhage during an album presentation forced a long break, yet that record also sold over a million copies, and the comeback concert in 2000 became a symbol of strength for fans. Over the years, age has done nothing to slow a career that includes judging roles on O Ses Türkiye and Popstar Alaturka, a hugely watched TV programme of her own, and a devoted following well beyond Turkey, especially in Iran.
Every Ebru Gündeş concert draws huge crowds, from multi-night runs at Volkswagen Arena to shows abroad. Recent work includes a collection of reworked classics and a new song recorded for a hit television series, proof that the voice remains as strong as ever.
The singer’s private life often makes headlines. Married four times, Ebru Gündeş most recently chose businessman Murat Osman Özdemir as her husband, with the couple marrying in 2024 and separating the following year. The marriage to Reza Zarrab brought her only child, a daughter named Alara, born in 2011 and raised far from the cameras. On the subject of religion, the artist has shared little in public, preferring to let the music speak.
