Biography & Career:
Kavita Seth is an Indian singer and composer, one of the best-loved Sufi voices in Hindi cinema. The artist remains as busy as ever, moving between film soundtracks, ghazals, folk songs and live Sufi evenings with the Karwaan Group, a Sufi ensemble under her direction.
The family background is modest: a bank officer father and a homemaker mother raised the future star in Uttar Pradesh. After marriage, a move to Delhi led to early work with All India Radio and Doordarshan. Kavita Seth was married to K.K. Seth, who worked with the Airport Authority of India, and her husband passed away in 2011. The couple had two sons, and both children grew up to become musicians: the elder son, Kavish Seth, and the younger, Kanishk Seth, who often performs and produces alongside his mother. Religion has never been a public talking point, though the spiritual side of Sufi poetry runs through almost everything Kavita sings.
The big break came at a Sufi festival concert in Delhi, where director Satish Kaushik heard the singer and offered a song in the 2005 film Vaada. Mumbai followed, and the list of movies featuring that voice soon grew to include Gangster, Wake Up Sid, Cocktail, Neerja, Begum Jaan, Jugjugg Jeeyo, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi and Kesari Chapter 2. Some fans look for an actress profile, but the career has always been built on singing and composing rather than acting, including the soundtrack for the BBC series A Suitable Boy.
Among the awards, two Filmfare trophies for Best Female Playback Singer stand out, in 2010 for Wake Up Sid and in 2023 for Jugjugg Jeeyo, along with a Star Screen Award. Every concert brings that warmth to the stage, from venues across India to shows in London, Birmingham, Berlin, Oslo and Stockholm, where audiences sing along to the best songs and biggest Bollywood songs of a two-decade career.
