Indian folk singer Malini Awasthi has a voice that, in recent years, has seen her contribute to numerous movies’ soundtracks. Having first started singing professionally over 30 years ago, Awasthi has built a career that has earnt her respect and recognition from fans across India and the region.
Known for her high pitch, Awasthi became popular for her version of ‘Thaare Raho Baanke Shyam’. As one of the classical Indian musicians, Awasthi has performed all over the world, at shows in the UK and US as well as shows as far as Mauritius and Fiji.
Awasthi has also been credited on numerous Bollywood movies including Bhole Shankar, Bumm Bumm Bole and 2012’s Agent Vinod, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Awasthi also sang the popular song ‘Sunder Susheel’ on Dum Laga Ke Haisha and ‘Saiyyan Mile’ on Chaarfutiya Chhokare.
Awasthi was formally recognized by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2003 when they awarded her the Awadh Samman. This award became a national accolade when she became a recipient of the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2016.
