Not many DJs can boast that they’ve DJ’d at the opening of the Olympics, playing their own blend of uplifting trance and powerful dance music to a combined audience well into the billions. But then again, not many DJs have the work ethic or sheer talent of Tiësto, or Tijs Michiel Verwest to his mum.
Named by dance music magazine Mixmag as the greatest DJ of all time following a reader poll, and more recently called the Godfather of EDM, Dutch DJ Tiësto was one of the big players in the huge trance scene around the turn of the Millennium. His 2nd album Just Be paved the way for his incredible 2004 Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, and from 2002 to 2004, he was voted Number 1 in the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ poll.
His sound has since evolved from his trance beginnings, with Tiesto increasingly known for his EDM and deep house sets as he continues to win over a new generation of dance music fans with his tight mixing skills and selections. With 4 albums to his name, Tiësto isn’t just an incredible DJ but also a world class producer, with his remix of John Legend’s ‘All Of Me’ winning a Grammy in 2015. A
hard working philanthropist as well, who heads up several charities and donates thousands of dollars to good causes every year, Tiësto continues to be a role model for dance music fans across the world.
