Biography & Career:
Kailash Kher is an Indian singer, composer and live performer whose raw, soaring voice blends Sufi poetry and folk tradition with rock energy. Music runs in the family: the first teacher was the father, Mehar Singh Kher, a traditional folk singer, and at 14 the young musician left home in search of deeper training. After a failed export business and years of struggle, a move to Mumbai in 2001 changed everything. Jingles paid the bills until the first song in a Hindi film arrived in 2003, and a Sufi anthem released later that year turned the newcomer into a household name. Now past fifty, Kher shows no sign of slowing down, and age has only deepened the emotion in that unmistakable voice.
In 2004 Kher formed the band Kailasa with brothers Naresh and Paresh Kamath, and a series of albums followed, each rooted in Sufi rock and devotional poetry. The catalogue now includes more than 500 Hindi film songs, plus Tamil songs for composers such as A.R. Rahman, Harris Jayaraj and Yuvan Shankar Raja, along with tracks in Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and many other languages. Fans tend to place band anthems and Bollywood favourites side by side among the best songs, from soulful love ballads to the thunderous chants written for the Baahubali films.
Television made the face as familiar as the voice. Kher sat on the judging panel of Indian Idol season 4 alongside Javed Akhtar, Sonali Bendre and Anu Malik. On stage, every performance feels like a celebration, with harmonium, dhol and entire audiences singing along. The tour calendar has covered the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, Hammersmith Apollo and the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and new upcoming events keep appearing across India and around the world.
Away from the spotlight, religion and spirituality shape both life and music, and many tracks carry devotional themes. Kher married wife Sheetal Bhan, a writer and producer, in 2009, and the couple has one son, Kabir. There is also a brother and a sister, Nutan, both of whom keep out of the public eye. Two decades of hits have made Kailash Kher one of the most recognisable voices in Indian music.
