Shahid Afridi

Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi is one of the most famous names in cricket in his home country and across the world. A holder of several records and a long-term captain of the Pakistani national team, Afridi has established himself as one of the top players to have played the sport.

A strong all-rounder, Afridi’s career began at a young age, starting his ODI International career at just 16 years old. In Afridi’s first batting innings, in his second match, he broke the record for the fastest century in ODI, reaching the milestone in just 37 balls. From that match onwards he was highly respected and praised for his performances.

Afridi made his international test debut against Australia in 1998 and went on to take five wickets, before hitting a century in his second ever test match. Afridi continued to impress cricket fans around the world with his wicket-taking abilities and high-scoring batting. Afridi played in the 2007 World Twenty20 and earnt the Man of the Series award.

In 2009, following Pakistan’s victory in the ICC World Twenty20, in which Afridi scored over 50 runs in both the semi-final and final, Afridi was named the captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Afridi lead his country to numerous wins in all three formats of cricket. Afridi went on to captain the national team to the Twenty20 World Cup semi-finals in 2012. In February 2017 Afridi announced his retirement from International cricket and is remembered as one of the best cricketers that Pakistan has ever produced.

As a club cricketer, Afridi has played around the world having first started his career in Karachi. He has played for Leicestershire and Melbourne Renegades, making him a well-travelled player.
