In a significant advancement for oncology care in the UAE, Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) in Abu Dhabi has successfully performed the country’s first-ever surgery to implant a Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump (HAIP). The procedure was conducted on a male patient in his 60s who had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer that had spread to the liver. The complex surgery, which lasted five hours, marks a major achievement in cancer treatment in the region.
The HAIP device, a small pump, is implanted under the skin in the abdominal area. It continuously administers chemotherapy into the hepatic artery, the liver’s primary blood supply. Since liver tumors derive most of their blood from this artery, the device enables higher doses of chemotherapy to reach the tumors while sparing other tissues from unnecessary exposure.

Currently, HAIP is available in only a few specialized centers worldwide, which makes this procedure a rare and exceptional accomplishment for the UAE.
The procedure at Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) in Abu Dhabi was completed successfully with no complications, and the patient was transferred to the recovery unit in stable condition. He is currently receiving post-operative care.
This breakthrough highlights the country’s continued commitment to providing state-of-the-art healthcare services and adopting cutting-edge medical technologies. In line with these advancements, Dubai Health Law was introduced in July 2025. The initiative aims to further ensure public health and maintain high standards in the UAE’s healthcare system.
