As residents of the UAE and neighboring regions look ahead, astronomers are forecasting that Ramadan in 2025 will likely begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. This important observance in the Islamic calendar brings with it a month dedicated to reflection, prayer, and fasting for Muslims around the world.

According to UAE astronomer Ibrahim Al Jarwan, who chairs the Emirates Astronomy Society, the crescent moon that signals the start of Ramadan is projected to form on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025. This sighting would mean that the first full day of Ramadan 2025 observance will fall on March 1, 2025, although official confirmation will depend on local moon sightings closer to the date.

Additionally, astronomers have highlighted that the Islamic month of Jumada al-Awwal will begin on Sunday, November 3, with the crescent for this month forming at 4:47 p.m. UAE time on Friday, November 1. Following Jumada al-Awwal, only three more months — Jumada Al Thani, Rajab, and Sha’ban — will remain before Ramadan arrives.

Ramadan’s Significance and Traditions

Ramadan holds deep religious significance for Muslims, who use this month as an opportunity for increased devotion and discipline. Fasting from dawn until dusk, Muslims refrain from food and drink, focusing instead on spirituality and acts of kindness.

The upcoming Ramadan 2025 will be particularly anticipated, as it marks only the second time in over two decades that the holy month falls during winter, making fasting hours shorter and more comfortable.

During Ramadan 2025, public and private sector work hours are expected to be reduced, allowing more time for family, prayer, and community involvement.

As the holy month approaches, residents in the UAE are encouraged to prepare for the spiritual and communal traditions that come with Ramadan, a time of renewal and connection for Muslims everywhere.
