Sharjah has taken a big step forward in its sustainability journey with the launch of SANA, the emirate’s first-ever solar power plant. Officially inaugurated by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Petroleum Department and SNOC, the plant brings a significant boost to local clean energy efforts.

SANA is located next to the Sajaa Gas Plant and covers a vast 850,000 square metres. The solar facility has a generation capacity of 60 megawatts, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of around 13,800 homes.

The plant features over 98,000 solar panels, mounted on 13,000 flexible poles. These structures are designed to track the sun’s movement during the day, helping to optimise energy collection. The project is expected to reduce around 66,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Sharjah’s broader environmental goals.

During the inauguration, Sheikh Sultan highlighted how this launch represents a strategic commitment to clean energy, resource conservation, and the vision set by the Sharjah Energy Council.

The solar plant is designed to be self-sufficient and interconnected. Any surplus electricity produced will be transferred to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA). In return, SEWA will provide energy back to SNOC during night-time hours, ensuring a balanced exchange and maximising efficiency.

With the inauguration of SANA, Sharjah has positioned itself firmly on the regional map for renewable innovation — paving the way for more sustainable infrastructure in the years to come.
