Born on July 27, 1963, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, she hails from a family with a strong musical background. K. S. Chithra was trained in classical music from a young age and quickly gained recognition for her powerful and soulful voice.

Her career began in the early 1980s, and she went on to become one of the most versatile playback singers in India. K. S. Chithra has recorded over 25,000 songs in various languages, making her one of the most prolific singers in the history of Indian cinema. Her Tamil songs and Hindi songs are some of the most popular, and she has worked with prominent composers like A. R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, and M. M. Keeravani.
