Several key updates regarding UAE passports were announced this week, making life a bit easier for Emirati citizens. If you’re a UAE passport holder, here are the essential changes you need to know about.

1. Renewing Your UAE Passport Now Possible Up to a Year in Advance

Starting Monday, August 18, Emirati citizens will now be able to renew their UAE passports up to a year before the expiry date. This change marks a big shift from the previous rule, which required citizens to renew their passport only six months before it expired.

This update gives UAE citizens more flexibility, allowing them to plan travel and complete official transactions without being limited by the six-month expiration rule. It will also help streamline the process for those relying on their passports for digital services, as many services are restricted if your passport is near expiration.

2. What to Do If Losing UAE Passport Abroad

In another update, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has made it simpler for UAE citizens who lose, damage, or have an expired passport while abroad. Now, citizens can apply for a “Return Document” in just three steps. Once the request is made, the return document will be sent via email within 30 minutes, allowing travelers to quickly resolve any issues related to lost or damaged passports.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) recommends that all travelers register for the “Twajudi” service on the MoFA website or app (available for Android and iOS). This allows the Ministry to stay in touch with travelers during emergencies or crises, and offer assistance with getting back to the UAE.

The UAE passport is one of the world’s strongest, allowing Emirati nationals to travel to 184 countries and territories without requiring a visa. While UAE citizenship isn’t easy to obtain, certain categories of foreigners can be nominated for Emirati nationality. These include:

  • Investors
  • Doctors and scientists
  • Intellectuals and inventors
  • Individuals with creative talents

This ensures that the nation continues to attract skilled professionals and talent from around the world.
