Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene just got a sweet new addition. Anko, a Japanese patisserie, has opened its doors atop teamLab Phenomena in the Saadiyat Cultural District, offering visitors a serene space to unwind with traditional Japanese desserts — with or without a ticket to the art museum below.

While teamLab Phenomena continues to draw crowds for its immersive digital installations, it’s the rooftop café that adds a more flavourful experience to the visit.

Anko takes its name from the Japanese sweet red bean paste, and the menu here stays close to its roots. Visitors can expect a wide range of Japanese confections, including:

  • Wagashi – traditional sweets made from plant-based ingredients
  • Pan – fluffy, Japanese-style breads
  • Yogashi – Western-inspired Japanese pastries

To complement the desserts, Anko also serves freshly brewed coffee and teas, offering a calm, reflective setting that mirrors the aesthetics of Japanese tea culture.

The space is as carefully curated as the desserts. Anko’s interiors are influenced by Oshibana, the Japanese art of pressed flowers, and feature organic shapes, floral accents, and white, minimalist furnishings. There’s also a terrace with sea views, making it a peaceful spot for both art lovers and dessert fans.

You don’t need to visit the exhibitions to enjoy Anko. The café is open to the public, making it an ideal stop whether you’re exploring Saadiyat Island’s cultural landmarks or just looking for a quiet spot to relax.
