Dubai has just unveiled a new urban initiative that brings the spirit of traditional Emirati neighbourhoods into today’s cityscape. Announced on May 5, the Hewi Dubai initiative aims to reshape public spaces into hubs that foster stronger social ties and promote healthier, more connected lifestyles.
Launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the project takes inspiration from the fareej — a traditional Emirati neighbourhood concept built around shared spaces, intergenerational bonds, and daily communal life.

First Project Under New Initiative: Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4
The first pilot under this initiative will be Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4, a public space developed in partnership between Dubai Future Foundation and Dubai Municipality. Located between a residential area and a mosque, the site was chosen for its walkability and existing sense of neighbourhood spirit.
The space will be co-designed with residents, making use of cultural insight and local data to guide development. The design leans heavily on comfort, familiarity, and daily rhythm rather than flashy one-size-fits-all structures.

What to Expect in Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4:
- Al Decha: A shaded gathering area near the mosque where elders can relax and share stories over Arabic coffee or tea.
- Al Saaha: A versatile indoor-outdoor venue for community events, workshops, and local celebrations.
- Al Yalsa: A relaxed family seating area overlooking a children’s play zone.
- Nature paths and play spaces designed to encourage walking, interaction across generations, and moments of calm in a natural setting.
This human-centric approach signals a broader shift in how Dubai is thinking about urban space — not just as areas to pass through, but as meaningful places where community life can thrive.
Hewi Dubai is part of the UAE’s Year of Community, a national push to reconnect people with each other and their surroundings through inclusive design and thoughtful planning.
