Abu Dhabi art lovers are in for a treat this December, with a rare opportunity to see some of the most iconic and expensive pieces ever sold – without spending a single dirham! The Sotheby’s Icons exhibition is bringing nine world-renowned works to the capital. Among them are Banksy’s ‘Love Is in the Bin,’ which famously shredded itself after being sold, Gustav Klimt’s ‘Dame mit Fächer,’ and Jane Birkin’s legendary Hermès Birkin Bag.
If you ever wanted to see those masterpieces up close, head to St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. The collection will be on display from December 2 to 6 before heading to Sotheby’s new headquarters in New York. It’s a chance to appreciate the beauty and value of these iconic works in person, free of charge.
Klimt’s ‘Dame mit Fächer,’ (Lady with a Fan) believed to be his last portrait. In 2023, it set a record for both a work of art in Europe and for the artist himself, when it was sold for AED 396 million.
The Birkin Bag fetched over USD 10 million in Paris earlier this year, solidifying its place as one of the most sought-after luxury items in the world.
Banksy’s ‘Love Is in the Bin‘ is actually the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction. It made headlines back in 2018, when the painting ‘Girl Without Balloon’ partially shredded itself moments after being sold. Ironically, such a stunt only boosted its value: the work was later sold for AED 91 million.
If you’re in Abu Dhabi between December 2 and 6, make it a priority to stop by and experience the magic of these incredible artworks. More information about how the exhibition and how to visit is available here.
Craving for more art? Don’t miss Abu Dhabi Art Fair! It’s open this week (until November 23) and features over 2,000 artworks on display for free. It’s another incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the local and international art scene.
