As we celebrate the Year of the Family in the UAE, Dubai’s school system is making significant updates that will affect both parents and students. From shorter rides to a new national curriculum, here are 4 changes in 2026 that aim to improve the overall school experience for families. Here’s everything you need to know for the years ahead
1. School Bus Rides Now Limited to 60 Minutes
Long rides have been a major concern for many parents, with some journeys stretching to two hours a day. New regulations state that school bus rides will now be capped at 45 minutes for younger students and 60 minutes for older ones. This change will ensure they aren’t exhausted before their school day even begins.
In addition, Dubai is piloting a school bus pooling system in Al Barsha. This could be a game-changer for students’ daily commutes!

2. Friday Classes End Earlier
Fridays are already half-days, but private school students will have even shorter Fridays. Class times are adjusted so that kids are out before 11:30 AM.
This change aligns with an update to Friday prayer times, allowing students and staff to make it home before prayers begin.
3. New Age Cut-Off Dates for School Admissions
The Ministry of Education has updated the age requirements for school admissions starting in the 2026/27 academic year and for subsequent years.
Children must meet the following age criteria by December 31 of the admission year:
- Pre-kindergarten: 3 years old
- Kindergarten 1: 4 years old
- Kindergarten 2: 5 years old
- Grade 1: 6 years old
These rules will not affect children already enrolled in school.

4. A New National Curriculum Is on the Way
Dubai schools will soon adopt a new national curriculum that will reshape how lessons are taught. The updated curriculum will focus on developing students’ national identity, societal values, and specific skills. This means you may notice changes in lesson plans and class schedules.
Other Important Updates for Parents in Dubai
1) Generative AI in schools. All students under 13 are banned from using generative AI for homework and school projects.
2) Mobile phone ban in schools. From August 2025, mobile phones are no longer allowed in UAE schools.
3) Child Digital Safety Law. As a parent, it’s crucial to understand your role in helping your child navigate screen time, online safety, and digital responsibility.
