Big changes are on the horizon for one of Dubai’s busiest thoroughfares. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a comprehensive urban upgrade for Umm Suqeim Street, aimed at easing traffic, improving public transport access, and enhancing the urban experience for both commuters and residents.
The project stretches from the intersection with Jumeirah Street all the way to Al Khail Road, covering 20 kilometres in total. It’s part of a larger master plan to enhance traffic flow, expand infrastructure, and create more liveable neighbourhoods along this vital corridor.

What’s Being Upgraded at Umm Suqeim Street?
- Traffic Capacity
Once completed, Umm Suqeim Street will handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, slashing travel time from 20 minutes to just six between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road.
- Cycling and Walking
A new cycling track and upgraded pedestrian walkways will promote safer and more sustainable transport options for residents and visitors.

- Complete Streets
The project will implement “complete streets” design, integrating green spaces and urban areas that encourage community interaction and accessibility.
- Public Transport Access
A direct connection between Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and surrounding residential areas is planned to make public transit more accessible.

Infrastructure Enhancements at Umm Suqeim Street
Six Major Intersections to Be Upgraded:
- Jumeirah Street
- Al Wasl Street
- Sheikh Zayed Road
- First Al Khail Street
- Al Asayel Street
- Al Khail Road
Also, the project aims to widen roads between First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street. One lane will be added in each direction, bringing the total to four lanes both ways.
In addition, a new flyover will link Al Khail Road with Al Quoz Industrial Area. Another will facilitate traffic from Umm Suqeim Street heading towards Deira.

Four New Tunnels and Three New Bridges
- At Sheikh Zayed Road, two new bridges will eliminate traffic overlap and improve movement.
- At Jumeirah Street, a tunnel with two lanes in each direction will be constructed alongside a surface-level junction.
- A second tunnel will connect Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Street to ease congestion.
This initiative forms part of a broader RTA strategy to transform Dubai’s infrastructure with an eye on sustainability, mobility, and liveability, serving a population of over two million across connected zones like Jumeirah, Al Quoz, and Al Qudra.
More details on related improvements to Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street will be announced soon by the RTA.
