Big changes are coming to one of Dubai’s busiest neighborhoods! Al Karama, known for its vibrant streets, affordable shopping, and mouthwatering street food, will soon be transformed into a car-free zone.
On Thursday, February 6, Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the launch of the Super Block initiative, a major step toward making Dubai more sustainable. The plan? To turn key residential areas into pedestrian-friendly zones, reducing car traffic and increasing green spaces.

Al Karama is one of Dubai’s most densely populated areas, packed with shops, restaurants, and thousands of residents. But with limited space and heavy traffic, walking around isn’t always easy. By removing cars from the area, the city hopes to create a more relaxed, healthier environment where people can walk, cycle, and enjoy public spaces without the hassle of vehicles.
It’s not just Al Karama — other neighborhoods like Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, and Al Quoz Creative Zone are also becoming car-free. This shift will encourage outdoor activities, reduce pollution, and make these areas more community-focused.

This initiative is part of Dubai’s bigger plan to become a more sustainable city. Under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the city is working towards a greener, more walkable future. Other eco-friendly projects include:
- A massive 6,500km network of pedestrian-friendly walkways.
- Therme Dubai, a wellness resort featuring the world’s largest indoor botanical garden.
- Over 216,000 trees planted in 2024 alone, expanding Dubai’s green spaces by 57%.
With fewer cars and more pedestrian zones, life in Al Karama is about to change for the better. Imagine strolling through quieter streets, enjoying fresh air, and having more parks and recreational spaces to relax in. The move also aligns with Dubai’s commitment to improving air quality, cutting down emissions, and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
